My hero is my mother Rev. Joyce Matthews. Pastor Joyce as her parishoners call her is my Mom. My mom came from meager beginnings in Detroit, MI and has never let her beginnings define her end. My mommy was always smart but she has the smarts to understand that education was her key to a better life for herself and one day the family she would have. My mom had a bachelors and masters degree and worked full time when I was growing up. She showed me that you can be a wife and working mother. She was always at my recitals and parent teacher conferences. My mom set the bar so high but I really do strive to be an even better version of her. More importantly my mother was a Respiratory Therapist and I was a severe asthmatic and my mom was there to make certain that any time I had trouble breathing was not the last breath I took on this earth. My mother’s knowledge helped me more times than I could even count. I am often reminded of the story I heard of my mom performing CPR on me during one of my attacks.
My mom graduated seminary 2 days before I graduated from medical school. She decided to go to seminary while I was in medical school. She left my dad at home for a year and moved to Evanston, IL. Christ Church Cranbrook is so blessed to have her as their Priest. She loves her work and she is so dedicated to her parishioners. My mom has been the best example of a hero to me all of my life. She showed me the importance in taking a leap to follow your passion and calling no matter the cost.
